Steve began his career as a Sound Mixer, Location Sound Recordist and Film Dubbing Editor, working on projects that included Nick Roeg’s The Witches, BBC’s 40 Minutes and LWT’s South Bank Show. Steve then embarked on a fifteen year career as an Editor, quickly building a reputation for Bafta Award winning television with Death of Yugoslavia and Castaway 2000, long running series, including Time Team, specialist wildlife programmes for the BBC, and hard-hitting one-off documentaries, including Mongrel Nation for Channel 4.
In 1991, Steve founded his own company in response to opportunities to offer broader technical post consultancy and produce. One of his first commissions was the new programme logo for BBC Wildvision. Next followed the pilot that secured international funding for the BBC wildlife series Killing for a Living. Steve went on to produce the English language versions of the BBC One World Art Series and a river of documentaries for Television Trust for the Environment. He was also invited to mentor new directors at the BBC, Metroland (the national scheme run by Hawkshead) and Endemol.
In 2003, Steve joined Majestic TV in southern Spain as Senior Editor. He was quickly promoted to Head of Post Production for single-handedly planning and setting up the post production department and training his team of offline editors to online. Steve continued to excel and a year later was promoted to Managing Director of the channel. In this capacity, he exec produced Coronation Street’s Curly Watts in the travel show Kevin’s Spanish Capers, with Keith Floyd’s Director, Mike Connor, at the helm. Next followed Food For Thought: a feature length documentary about the unprecedented 26 day fast of 3 Ukrainian spiritualists. Through Sara Ramsden (former Commissioning Editor at Channel 4 and Endemol), Steve secured a Channel 5 acquisition for the documentary.
Steve successfully sold Majestic TV in 2005, purchasing the extensive production and post production facilities to re-form CUT Productions as a Spanish limited company. CUT Productions S.L. continued to provide production and post production services to Yorkshire TV, BBC, Endemol and Sky TV and to form a longstanding relationship with Real Estate TV, making pan European factual entertainment programmes.
In all this time Steve continued to bring his extensive post production experience to bear on a wealth of projects and workflows for leading broadcasters such as A&E entertainments of America, as well as developing skills as a broadcast cameraman with new HD technologies for both TV and corporate work. His varied international work, now spanning over 30 years, has been based in both the UK and Spain, culminating in developing a working relationship with Tim Silano, a leading Hollywood features editor.
In the last few years Steve too has become heavily involved in new media technologies including video streaming, compression and production for companies such as San Francisco based ON24, media technical consultation on workflows and technologies involving HD, solid state and Beta testing for major hardware/software companies such as AVID and EDITSHARE. He has launched and developed his own eBook and Print publishing platform and publishing company: MobiApp121 Publishing, and developed a successful Google Chrome eReader app. He also developed technologies to encode for new digital file delivery and metadata standards, to broadcast TV and Cinema.
